Dressing Toddlers for the Holidays

November 28, 2014

Fellow Style Mavens!

If you feel like just controlling the kids over the holidays is enough of a feat, let alone dressing them well for all your festive engagements, then you can join the majority of tired, stressed, and overworked parents out there. My tip (as a non-parent, mind you) for getting the kids ready for the myriad of events this season, whether it be for school, a school activity, Church or family gatherings is to prepare in advance! If you make it a "special occasion outfit" with a few smart interchangeable pieces, then you will be set for all your upcoming events. If you keep the clothes as "special occasion only," then the kids will hopefully get excited to wear their Sunday best!

Recently I styled the outfits below for toddlers up to 4 years old for my Fashion Friday segment on WTHR. For those of you that missed it live, you can see the segment video here.

These outfits are so fun and festive, yet warmth and comfort play such an important role in clothing this time of year. I don't like to wear itchy or bulky outfits, so I can't expect that kids would want to either.

I love the Parisian inspired outfit above for a younger girl (around 18 months old) styled from Baby Gap. The cotton floral dress paired with warm red leggings, the navy blazer with bow detail, the ballet slippers, and the beret hat are all so feminine yet wearable. Your daughter would be happily playing all day in this sweet outfit.

This outfit above from Gap Kids is so festive and fashionable! The added touch of sparkle would have any little girl feeling just like a winterland princess and the red peacoat with toggle clasps is a stylish and classic way to keep her warm. We all know how chilly it can get in the big open school halls or even at Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.

The big trend for boys right now is to look just like older siblings or even Dad. So the outfits I styled for the little guys in your family are almost like mini-me versions of bigger kid outfits. In the outfit above I've put together the festive patterned sweater with a shearling lined collar, paired with dark corduroy pants, brightened up by the chambray shirt half untucked for the "cool" factor, and finally the lace up boat shoes with leather accents.

The outfit above is styled from Gap Kids for a 4 or 5 year old boy. He will feel so trendy with the dark denim and quilted jacket with a baseball cap to hide any messy hair days. The grey pullover is soft yet warm enough to wear on its own and the pop of red buffalo check pattern brightens up the outfit with the shirt and matching lining on the hiking boots. You'll notice that everything for the boys is cuff-able, so you can buy a size up and get a full season of wear, despite any holiday growing!

Take note of my shopping tips and be prepared. Get your outfits planned early this year! Head to the Fashion Mall at Keystone and check out GAP Kids and Baby GAP for the looks above.

Happy shopping friends!

The Four Coat Trends You Need This Winter

November 26, 2014

Now that the temperatures are finally dropping (albeit periodically when those arctic fronts blow through down south), it's always good to be prepared with a proper coat or jacket. These are four styles that you should have at least one of in your closet this winter.

1) Fur Coats – Whether you're into real or faux fur, it's always quite the statement piece. And you can find one in any price range. This Miu Miu Leopard Print Shearling Coat will keep you warm and stylish all season. A bold print coat is a go-to this year, or go for an un-natural color like pink or navy.

2) Puffer Coats – For the extreme cold, you can still stay stylish with a fitted puffer coat. No longer are they the marshmallow puffers, adding pounds to everyone. This Moncler puffer has a fur trim on the hood for that added touch of luxury.

3) Leather Jacket – My one must have tip for everyone is to have at least one good leather jacket. Sure it can be edgy and your go-to for casual days, but toss it over a dress in the evening to edge up any look. This J Brand Aiah jacket has all the details.

4) Wool Coat – This season continues with the oversize trend. So pick up an oversize cocoon, robe, cape, or blanket coat. While the oversize cocoon or robe may not be the most flattering, I find a cape or military style wool coat to flatter almost anyone. I'm just in love with this Vivienne Westwood Gaia Wool-Blend Cape

Fashion Survival While Home for the Holidays

November 26, 2014

Coming home for the holidays is the best. That is, unless you're already living at home (like this job-seeking college graduate). Then it's just like any other day and now it just happens to be the holidays. Regardless, everyone's mentality is a little bit like this

But remember when you come home for the holidays, everyone comes home for the holidays. So yes, you're going to see your high school boyfriend/girlfriend, or your former best friend you ditched sophomore year for a much better (and less basic) best friend. Which means you need to look your best at all times.

Fashion blogger Jenn Im has the "Home for the Holidays" look covered for the ladies below:

But what about the guys? I've gathered a few items that will have you looking like a 10 out of 10, no matter who you run into while you're home this season.

So let's be honest. No way you're going to resist sweatpants the whole time you're home, especially when your parents send you to the store when they've run out of food or – God forbid – wine. No worries. I'd recommend a pair of trendy sweatpants like these quilted and zipper-adorned joggers from H&M. So when you do run into the last person on earth you want to see, at least you'll be cool and comfortable.

Like Jenn Im said, you need a great chunky knit this season. I say go with this Scotch & Soda Shawl Collar Sweater from Nordstrom. It's warm, durable, and just the thing you want everyone from high school to spot you in. It screams, "I'm successful and doing much better than you in life, but I don't need to rub it in your face or anything."

Pair your chunky knit with a simple pant like this Hawkings McGill Stretch Skinny Chino Pant from Urban Outfitters. A dark straight or skinny jean would work as well.

I'm also really digging this Jacquard-knit Sweater from H&M. You can never go wrong with some good stripes and a simple print, especially around the holidays.

It’s All About Those Boots

November 25, 2014

Tis the season for boots! It's time to make sure you're stocked up with some of the hottest boot styles this season, from chelsea to over the knee. Here are just a few of my favorites that you should run to the store to get.

1) Over-the-knee boots – Really a style that started as a trend that's just a staple now. My favorite version is the Stuart Weitzman – Highland boot. This boot is everything to me. It can really turn any outfit into a "wow" outfit. And it comes in a few colors… if grey is too bold for you, go for the classic black version. And if the heel is daunting, there's always the lowland version which, in my opinion, is just as hot.

2) 50/50 Boots –  For those who have calf issues with boots, whether too big or too small, 50/50 boots are half leather, half elastic-y material so they can fit calves of varying sizes. Stuart Weitzman also wins my favorite in this style, but there are plenty of more affordable styles, like these INC 50/50 boots from Macy's.

3) Stiletto Ankle bootie – A nice high heeled ankle boot can edge up a look like a girly dress in no time. I'm in love with these Saint Laurent – Paris metallic leather boots. First they're gold, which is amazing, and second that silhouette is just perfect.

4) The everyday boots – I may like the look of high-heels, but I don't like the pain, so I always have a pair of flat or low-heeled boots when lots of walking is required. I just adore a low stacked heel ankle boot. They go perfect with skinny jeans or any mini-skirt. Added bonus with these Circus by Sam Edelman Reese Monk Strap boots is that pointed toe. The more pointed the toe, the better.

Guys’ Guide to Gift Giving: Black Friday Edition

November 25, 2014

Pssst… guys! It's that time of year again. That time when your lady is expecting a holiday gift she can brag to all her friends about. You want to get that gush-worthy gift for her, but when you ask her what she wants, she'll probably shrug and say she will love whatever you buy her. And although this sounds like a dream come true… it's a trap! Truth is, it's likely she's trying to telepathically communicate her wish list. And if you're like any other man, reading your woman's mind is definitely one of your weaknesses.

Think of the things she already has, but always wishes she had more of or an updated version. It's a bit like video games are for many men (though it's best not to admit it!). Take mental notes about certain colors and types of jewelry she wears – this will make it easy to choose the perfect gift that she will wear without end! And if you really wanna score a few points, try thinking outside the box this season with a gift that she will really enjoy!

Here’s an idea. Give her what she really wants for the holidays… something she deserves. Why not reward your lady with a gift that shows her just how sweet and thoughtful you are. I'm thinking that a little bit of pampering should do the trick! So on Black Friday, after the turkey has been gobbled up, and the shopping madness is back to normal, surprise your lady with her very own personal pamper party! A day of relaxation to recover from turkey week. Sprinkle in a few extra treats and you've got the recipe for a bliss-filled night!

We’ve taken out all of the guess work for you with a few gushing-goodies that’ll make you King of the Checkout Counter. You'll go down in gift-giving history and, most importantly, you’ll be a hit at the office when she gushes over just how thoughtful and amazing her guy is! Who’s the man now, Santa?!

Lush Cosmetics - You're A Star Gift set

You're A Star – Lush Cosmetics – Macy’s $79.95

Lavish from the inside out, this gift is just what she needs to make her feel like a star.

Sequin Beaded Charm Bracelet

Sequin Charm Bracelets – Bloomingdale’s $38.00

Send positive vibes her way with one of these stackable 14k gold-plated charms that bear meaningful words like "strength," "balance," or "goodness" as a subtle yet strengthening daily reminder.

Heat Lounge - Lenox Square

Heat Lounge (Lenox Square)

After all of that Black Friday shopping, she’s gonna need a place to relax and let her hair down… literally! Opt for The Ultimate Makeover ($60)…you’ll thank me for it!

Macaron Queen

Macaron Queen (Lenox Square)

One word… macarons! If there's anything a girl loves more than life, it's gotta be something sweet. These tiny treats are straight from heaven and will definitely score you a few points (and kisses too).

Rockwell Tharp Comes to The Fashion Mall at Keystone

November 24, 2014

Fellow Style Mavens!

This past weekend we welcomed the legendary brand "Rockwell Tharp" to The Fashion Mall at Keystone. One of the mall's newest store additions, Day Furs, hosted their grand opening event and to celebrate the occasion, the owners (who happen to also be the designers of this rock-western brand) were on hand to answer questions and meet with guests in-store all weekend.

Worn proudly by many celebrities around the world, Rockwell Tharp has quickly gained a cult following, especially from rock and western artists. The designer's huge range and customization availability has helped make these special boots so popular.

You can see below a few of the styles that were on display at Day Furs. One of my favorites the blonde cheetah cowboy boot.

In addition to boots, they also make hand woven and beaded bags such as the one shown below on the left. The classic leather bag below on the right shows a more conservative side to the brand.

As you can see, there is nothing ordinary about anything from Rockwell Tharp. If you're wanting to stand out in the crowd or make a personal fashion statement, then this brand is definitely for you.

You can see how I styled my Rockwell Tharp boots here. So hop to finding your favorite this season and add it to your holiday gift list in time for Santa to stop by and pick it up for you!

Happy shopping my friends!

Flaunt Boudoir – An elegant picture perfect experience

November 20, 2014

Picture for a moment a beautiful boudoir setting. A tufted chaise lounge with sumptuous fabrics draped across it takes center focus. The elegant ambiance of the scene is rivaled only by the lovely silhouette of a woman as she poses to the clicking of the camera shutter. As the camera flashes to her every movement, her essence is captured in the flicker of a picture perfect moment.

Now…  Envision that woman is YOU.

Kris Janovitz - Flaunt BoudoirThe vision of professional photographer Kris Janovitz, Flaunt Boudoir creates a luxurious experience that’s pampered with glamour and elegance, and just oozes of charm. Flaunt captures the beauty and sensuality of women and creates a lasting sensation of confidence and empowerment. Flaunt Boudoir is more than a photography studio… it’s an experience.

Recently I had the pleasure of shooting a pin-up style photo session at Flaunt Boudoir and I must say that it was an absolutely unforgettable experience. From the moment I entered the studio I immediately felt like a Hollywood starlet getting ready for her close-up.  I was so excited and could not wait to get my glam on. But before the glamourocity got underway, I was treated to a fabulous makeup and styling session courtesy of Flaunt’s resident Makeup Artist, Michele Franco. A few complimentary mimosas later, and after getting all dolled-up and diva-fied by Michele, it was time to strike a pose. And, Kris did an uh-mazing job! She had me channeling my inner vixen, and let me tell ya that I was in rare form. In fact, I was so in-to character that Marilyn Monroe would blush with envy. It was sooo much fun!!!

Here are a few candid captures of my beauty shoot at Flaunt Boudoir. But be warned, there are dangerous curves ahead. 😉

And if you think you have to be some Cosmo supermodel to pose in a glamour shoot you’re wrong. Kris guides you along every step of the way during your photoshoot, resulting in images that truly capture the essence, beauty, and sexiness of YOU.

Flaunt Boudoir offers several beauty shoot experiences ranging from contemporary to vintage to pin-up, each including professional hair and makeup styling and a studio photoshoot. And they even package your posh pics on a cute crystal USB inside a little blue box. Too fab!

You can see their complete list of portrait packages HERE. Flaunt also brings the “boudoir to you” where you can be photographed at your residence or hotel suite giving you a more private and personalized parlor experience. Talk about fabulocity on the go!!!

Kris Janovitz & Michele Franco - Flaunt Boudoir with Nikka Shae

Huge hugs to both Kris and Michele for such an exhilarating and memorable experience. The pictures were absolutely stunning and I left feeling so uplifted, inspired and confident.

The moment I showed my hubby the images from the shoot his jaw literally fell into his lap. Now I can never be sure, but I could hear what sounded like Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On being played ever so softly. 😛

Hey, every woman wants deserves to feel elegant and pretty, and the girls at Flaunt know just how to enhance and capture your beauty, creating a long lasting keepsake that you (and your significant other) will cherish forever. So shoot on over to Flaunt and get your ‘boudoir on’, and let your inner starlet shine. You’ve got it… Flaunt it!

Atlanta’s Marriott Marquis transforms lobby into a unique Pop-Up shopping experience

November 18, 2014

Imagine you’re in town for a few days on business. You’re in meetings all day followed by even more business chatter at dinner. When it’s time to head home you realize that you haven’t shopped for that special gift for yourself, or your loved ones back home. Well, if you’ve ever been to a city like Atlanta, you know just how daunting an effort that can be. Besides the notion of having to navigate your way around the big city, there’s always that underlying fact that there is simply no time to go shopping. Of course, you could stop by the lobby gift shop, but there’s nothing there that you can’t find anywhere else. Besides, gift shops are so yesterday.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could shop for unique finds from the comfort of the hotel? Not only would this save time, but it would eliminate all of the guess stress work of finding the perfect gift.

Well, that’s exactly what Marriott Hotels and American Express had in mind when they teamed up to create a unique and innovative shopping experience for guests. Offering travelers with genuine, locally-inspired experiences, Marriott and AMEX have re-imagined the future of travel with their new Travel Brilliantly – Shop Small® Pop Up initiative. Here’s the concept… Promote local businesses and provide a unique shopping experience for travelers and guests where they can explore neighborhood shops without leaving the lobby. What a brilliant idea!

Recently I “popped in” to the Marriott Marquis Hotel in downtown Atlanta to preview this new “gifts-to-you” concept and I must say that I was truly impressed. Not only is it literally “out of the box”, but the space felt very intimate and uber chic. Set inside a cool showcase-style mini-boutique, local retailers display a unique collection of exclusive finds that travelers won’t find anywhere else. Showcase shoppers could also gain a little insight on the pop-up shop and the featured retailers courtesy of a touch screen display situated at the shops entrance. Fabulous!

Marriott Hotels American Express hosts Shop Small Pop Up Shop

Local lures on display at the pop-up showcase include:

Guffey’s, a custom clothier that offers a distinct selection of dress and casual clothing for men. Eco Denizen, an eco-friendly retailer that features unique handmade products and gifts ideas. blabla Kids, who offers contemporary artisan-crafted hand knit dolls and apparel, as well as toys, rattles and more for kids. TRIO Custom Clothiers, who offers affordable bespoke tailored suits, shirts, and other garments for men. Crafted Westside, a collective of talented artisans and designers offering unique jewelry, apparel, accessories, art/décor, and bath and body products. Tweeds, a men’s shop offering handcrafted men’s clothing and accessories. Uptown Pups, a doggie boutique that offers fun, unique, and affordable pet products. And, Young Blood, a fabulous boutique that features beautiful hand-crafted, jewelry, art, and creatively inspired pieces for the home.

Marriott Hotels American Express hosts Shop Small Pop Up Shop

I caught up with Young Blood Boutique’s co-owner Jessie White for a quick Q&A about the boutique, her inspirations for YBB, and their aspirations for the future.

What is Young Blood? How do you describe your business to someone who is entering your store for the first time?

“We stock a curated collection of goods from independent designers and artists from all over the US. We have everything from jewelry and art prints to apothecary and home goods. And, we’re always adding new lines to the shop to keep it fresh.”

Chic custom creations

What do you love most about your business?

“There’s so much! It’s pretty great to hang around jewelry all day…but a lot is due to our artists and our customers. The designers and artists we work with are not only talented but they’re all really kind, solid people. It’s rewarding to be able to work with them so that we can all continue doing what we love each day. And, our customers are the best. Many of them have been coming to Young Blood for years and we’ve had the opportunity to watch them get married, meet their children, or hear about their business ventures or travels. It’s fun to be able to see the ways in which the things they find in the shop fit into their lives.”

Fabulous feather accessories

What made you decide to get involved in the pop-up shop, and how has it been so far?

“It’s been great and we’re honored to have been invited to participate. The pop-up is a unique way to reach out to travelers who may not otherwise get a chance to venture too far out into the city. It’s always been one of our goals to turn new people on to the benefits of buying independently made goods. We’re excited some folks in other cities are getting Holiday gifts from Atlanta this year!”

Hand colored risograph by Jason Murphy on Katie Ridley Murphys silkscreen twig scarf

Hand colored risograph by Jason Murphy on Katie Ridley Murphys silkscreen twig scarf

What’s on the horizon for Young Blood?

“We’re fortunate that our customers and our community have been very supportive and the shop is growing a lot. There are a couple different directions we could go next year and we’re currently trying to figure out which one feels right. One thing we know for sure, we want to bring even more new art and design to the city. There is so much exciting stuff out there!”

Indeed!!!

Marriott’s pop-up shop is much more than a concept… it’s an amenity rooted in convenience. Afterall, shopping on-the-go should be fun, stress free, and most importantly accommodating. Now that’s brilliant idea!

Stop by the main lobby at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in downtown Atlanta to check out all of the local retailers on display and be sure to pick up a few pieces that you can’t live leave without. 😉

The Pop Up Shop will showcase thru November 30 at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis hotel located at 265 Peachtree Center Ave NE in Atlanta, GA. Visit HERE for shop hours and additional details.
