Hey Divas!

Last Friday August 26th, Nicole Anderson Land of Cross Walk Shop, DL Winfrey of Pretty Girl Rocks Dresses, and lil ole Me (Nikka Shae of Oh! Nikka) urged all the Facebook-Fab Ladies and Twit-Chic Divas to “Rock Your Red Shoes” in celebration of Women’s Equality Day; AND to send their glam-tastic photos of them rockin their “crimson beauties” so that we could post them on OhNikka.com for the entire world to see.

We want to thank everyone who supported this great endeavor for it was truly an amazing display of unity and liberation….and, a great reason to “put on your red shoes and dance the blues” ( a little David Bowie for all my 80’s ladies 😀 ).

So, in the spirit of the women whose sacrifices lead to women in this country being granted the right to vote, we would like to take this grand event to a “step” further….and have a good ole fashion contest! A VOTE to see who has the “hautest pair” of red shoes.

Nothing says “thank you” better than a giveaway; and who couldn’t use a few extra goodies for their glam-pad?!

So, we’ve uploaded and posted all the photos we received last week by YOU, to be voted on to see who had the “hautest pair” on the blogosphere!

Ok, so here are the rules:

Rate each photo on a scale of 1 – 5 stars.
Each star is equivalent to 1 (one) vote, so if you rate a photo “3 stars”, it will be equal to “3 votes”.
You are allowed only 1 (one) vote per email address.
You must confirm your vote via an email confirmation link that will be sent to you upon submitting your vote.

Accessories Anonymous members LA Lynn and Nikka Shae

Earlier this month I attended the one year anniversary revival-extravaganza 😀 for Finding Eve Soul Café, and I was so overjoyed during the celebration that in my moment of jubilee I began to jump, shout, praise, and worship. My chiropractor states that I’m doing much better now, and that I should be back at 100% very soon. 😛 Unfortunately the woman seated in front of me at the celebration was on the receiving end of a good majority of my shouting and may have suffered temporary deafness as a result. Luckily I had the pleasure of talking to this lady prior to my uncontrollable fit of excitement. She introduced herself as Efie Lynn and stated that she is the “She-EO” of an online boutique called LA Lynn’s Accessory Shoppe.

And at that moment I immediately knew she was a card carrying member of AA (Accessories Anonymous):-D. So during our conversation about what else; jewelry, Lynn mentioned that she would be having a bday bash and launch party for her business the following week. I told her that I would definitely be in attendance, as there are two things that I absolutely cannot say no to…a party with jewelry and accessories and/or jewelry and accessories at a party. I will give you a few moments to catch that one. 😀

So, Hubby in tow, I arrived at Lynn’s BORN day party (as she calls it) only to see a smorgasbord of cute accessories that were laid out like the fixin’s at the Ponderosa. 😀 Now I haven’t dined at the Ponderosa in many a year, and using the word “fixin’s” is generally reserved for intimate conversations among close friends and family….but my point is that Lynn carries some of the most fab and unique pieces around and I was more than willing to indulge in the buffet. 😛

So as I perused through the selection, a pair of peacock feathered beauties immediately caught my eye, and were “cawing” my name. 😀 Then I “spotted” (last one, I promise) several pearled and multi-colored statement pieces that swoop the neckline…F.A.B!!! LA Lynn’s also carries bold metal, wooden, and marble bangles that would be sure to turn a head or two and/or cause instant envy from onlookers.

Rock Your Red Shoes

Hey Divas!

My good friend Nicole Anderson Land from Cross Walk Shop wants us (women) to “Rock Your Red Shoes” all day on August 26th, 2011 in celebration of Women’s Equality Day.

This is a great opportunity for women ALL OVER THE WORLD to acknowledge the sacrifices that others have made to ensure that ALL women be treated as equals…. So, in the spirit of this momentous event, let us all unite for a day of liberation and celebration by rockin our red shoes, red heels, and red pumps! Oh my!!

So, I contacted my OTHER good friend, DL Winfrey of PrettyGirlsRockDresses.com (I have quite a few believe it or not :-D), to help get the word out on the social media networks about this monumental endeavor. Of course pretty girls rock dresses, and apparently they also rock red shoes as DL was more than willing to help spread the word.

Ok ladies, let’s dust off those baaad “red head-turners”; those sexy “red-alerts”; and those hot “vixen red showstoppers” (you know…the ones that you’ve been saving for that special occasion).

I want to send out a special “thank you” to DL Winfrey of Pretty Girls Rock Dresses and all the ladies that met this past weekend at Atlantic Station cinemas in downtown ATL for the viewing of The Help. Pretty Girls Rock Dresses is an empowering movement for woman to dress like ladies, and embrace their femininity. So in the spirit of this lost tradition, we got all dolled up for a fun day at the movies.

And, speaking of The Help movie; I’d rate this one up there with The Color Purple. Yep, you heard me right! It was definitely a great film that will make a strong appearance at the Oscars® next February 27. This powerful and compelling film will make you laugh, cry, and even possibly throw your popcorn at the screen during certain poignant moments. 😮

I don’t want to give away the storyline, but let’s just say that the film speaks to all types of women from various walks of life and social classes. Here’s a brief synopsis of the movie from the official movie website:

Based on one of the most talked about books in years and a #1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon, “The Help” stars Emma Stone (“Easy A”) as Skeeter, Academy Award®–nominated Viola Davis (“Doubt”) as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny—three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s, who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed —even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times.

Deeply moving, filled with poignancy, humor and hope, “The Help” is a timeless and universal story about the ability to create change.

The cast featured a well rounded group of actresses which included veterans like Cicely Tyson (Constance Jefferson), Sissy Spacek (Missus Walters), and Viola Davis (Aibileen). These fab ladies all showed why they are deserving of their past Oscar® and Emmy® nominations. I’m gonna put my bid in now and say that Viola Davis will get the nod for Best Actress at the Oscars®. There. I said it. 😉 The film also featured up and comers Jessica Chastain (Celia), Bryce Dallas Howard (Hilly), Octavia Spencer (Minny), Emma Stone (Skeeter), Allison Janney (Charlotte), and Mary Steenburgen (Elaine Stein) who also did a wonderful job!

Oh, Ms. Mary (bka Mary J Blige), penned an original song called “The Living Proof” for the movie’s soundtrack. See what Mary had to say about the song here.

This movie was so inspirational that the Home Shopping Network (HSN) is featuring one-of-a-kind items created in the spirit of the movie. Check it out here.

The movie was adapted from the novel of the same name, written by Kathryn Stockett. While watching the movie, I couldn’t help but reflect back on fond childhood memories of my grandma who worked as a maid for many many years. She would take me along with her sometimes while she cleaned homes. And even though she was working, I really enjoyed those times with her as she would make it so much fun. 😀

Now, I know you’ll probably think I’m pulling your leg when I tell you the nickname we called my grandma by. Give up? We affectionately and respectfully referred to her as Madea. Yep, it’s true! Now there are MANY differences between Tyler Perry’s version of “Madea” and my grandma Madea (of course). One obvious difference was that MY grandma never toted fully loaded firearms in her bra. 😀

It’s Ladies Night…Oh, what a night!

The fabulous Jamie Foster Brown aka The Life of the Party

And what a night it was! As Jamie Foster Brown, publisher of Sister 2 Sister magazine (aka “The Barbara Walters of Print”) brought out a few of her celeb friends for a star studded night of dancing, pampering, a little bit of shopping, and plenty of glam-tastic moments! The event was held at the Mason Murer Fine Arts Gallery in Atlanta, and I mean the place was jammed packed!

Celeb appearances included Fab-Lanta’s very own, and locally grown Georgia peach Kandi Burruss of the Real Housewives of Atlanta, who I missed by a few minutes from what I was told. She showed up, along with R&B crooner Bobby Valentino, just minutes after I left the event. Still kickin myself for that faux pas. 🙁 I’m sure I will catch Ms. Kandi very soon.

Lisa Wu Hartwell (Closet Freak clothing) and Tameka “Tiny” Harris were also scheduled to appear but they were both no-shows; although Tiny’s Nail Bar was there to represent in Tiny’s absence. I was really looking forward to meeting both ladies too. So far I’m 0 for 4, but, I’m just getting warmed up… so, read on. 😛

Meeka Claxton from Basketball Wives was also in the house, and I must say…She was flawless! Meeka was a lot of fun too, and very gracious despite how she’s been depicted on the show. So, always remember what your momma taught you growing up…Never judge a stiletto until you’ve worn a pair. Wait; your mother never said that? Well, you get the point (I hope). 😛

Also in attendance was Ne-Yo’s fiancée Monyetta Shaw, Michael Vick’s fiancée Kijafa Frink, and R. Kelly’s ex Andrea Kelly. Monyetta was rockin a fab Birkin bag that would go great with these Giuseppe’s I’ve been dreamin about lately. Ok Monyetta; we need to talk girl!

I also met Toya Wright of Toya: A Family Affair, who was there promoting her NY Times Best Selling book, “Priceless Inspirations”. OMG!!! Toya is one of the sweetest and most down to Earth people around. Her publicist, Danielle Cardriche-Johnson, invited me to an event that Toya will be hosting this weekend along with her new hubby Mickey “MempHitz” Wright, and I can’t wait to see the happy newlyweds together. Ahhh; love! There’s nothing like it!

Can’t forget the vendors who provided everything from designer clothing, fab shoes and accessories, to beauty and health related products. There were a bevy of women entrepreneurs in the house promoting their businesses, boutiques, and other services. LAMIK was also there providing free makeovers, Ultimat Vodka covered the drinks and VitaminWater provided the refreshments. And ladies; there were chest-bearing and shirtless men on tap to give complimentary massages. Whoohoo!!!

The highlight of the night was when the DJ put on the “Wobble” song. The place literally went nuts as everyone scrambled to the dance floor!

Ms. Jamie grabbed me and pulled me out there along with all the other ladies to “boogie oogie oogie” (Ok, I’m showing my age… :-P)

Thanks Ms. Jamie for a fun night of laughter, partying and shopping… After tonight she should be referred to as “The Life of the Party” :-D), as no one can “get down” like she can! (Oops, there I go again :-P)

Create the Look (Retro Ri Ri)

Hey Divas!

So, as I was browsing around the Internet looking for any interesting news circulating the blogosphere about any and everything fashion, I stumbled on this pic of Ri Ri in a sleek black blazer, dawning pearls and a retro style bob hairdo.

Ri Ri is rockin a very classic look with throwback ques to 1920’s era with the pearls and the 1940’s hairdo, complete with popping red lip paint.

So my daughters see the look and suggest that I try and recreate it. Now generally it’s not wise to take fashion advice from anyone under the legal age to buy their own clothes :-D, but this is a “special” exception, of course. Besides, they are both Divas in training and will one day have the proverbial “Torch of the Fashionista” passed down to them.

Finding Eve celebrates Love, Life, and the Lord

The Decatur Hotel & Conference Center’s Swanton Amphitheater played host to a celebration of Love, Life, and The Lord, as Finding Eve Soul Cafe commemorated their one year anniversary in revival-esque fashion, for a spirit-filled night of praise and worship. And, let me tell you…it was definitely a Holy-ghost party!

Hosted by Christian comedian Stephon Raickett, the event sparked the anniversary of FESC mission to provide the quintessential venue for Christian’s to socialize, laugh, and sing, in a wholesome and mature environment without the drawbacks of the common nightlife activities. Entertainment at FESC comes complete with live music, poetry, spoken word, and comedy.

And, if you haven’t heard of the Finding Eve Soul Cafe you don’t know what you are missing. The cafe caters to all Christian’s; whether married, single, or couples; FESC welcomes all with open arms. Founder Nyasia Bowen’s philosophy is Live Life. Love God. No Compromise. Nyasia, who is also the owner of Eventista Productions, believes “One can be saved, love God, and live a fun, fulfilled life without compromising one’s faith“. Amen.

Let me tell you, this event did not compromise on anointing every soul in the house. And there was no emotion spared, as the celebration brought moments of uncontrollable laughter, tears of joy and jubilee, and praise and reverence all in the name of The Lord. Can we have some church in here!

Comedian Stephon Raickett had the crowd in stitches the entire night

Comedian Stephon Raickett warmed up the crowd up with his signature style of Christian-based observational comedy. Stephon kept the “congregation” in stitches as he touched on everything from the pulpit-to-the-pews, and everyone else in between!

When the house band came on stage I had to do a double take, as upon first glance I thought it was my teen-aged son and his pals attempting to crash the party. 😀 But alas, it was a band made-up of young adults that played their instruments like they’d been attached to them from birth. 😀 AMAZING!!!

Now when I tell you there were some Gospel “sangers” there (spelled correctly by the way ;-P), that’s exactly what they were. This crop of artist brought it! I’m talking about the kind of “sangin” (again, spelled correctly), that would no doubt make the final cut of Sunday Best and/or send Donnie McClurkin into a praise break episode while singing along in pitch perfect harmony. 😀

The lineup included some of the FESC alum, along with a few others from across the country. Stanley Seymour and crew lead the roster of performers, and they ushered in the praise like none I’ve ever seen or heard before! I was so overjoyed and moved that I couldn’t stay in my seat…let alone stay still. My sincere apologies goes out to the lady seated directly in front of me as I likely caused the minor tone-deafness in her left ear from all of my shouting throughout the night. 😐 Gospel artist Marlo Moore, Gospel MC Ryan “E-Hud” Ellis, Gospel artist J. Locke, the Jackson Twinz, poetess Torey “3rd Sunday” Hill, and Christian recording artist LaTonya Scott were also there to deliver the Victory.

Nadia Mathews of Grace & Peace Productions was also in attendance to sign her book “How I Let Her Steal My Husband“, along with Ayanna Foster-Kelson of Christian publication Renewed Magazine, Anastasia Whylly of Satisfy Your Style jewelry and accessories, Kingdom Klothes, and Brian K. Chesson of Roc-Ya-Spirit Apparel.

During the celebration, guest also enjoyed cupcakes, door prizes, free gas cards (who couldn’t use a few of those!), and free FESC t-shirts.

Market Rwanda

Recently I was invited by Denise Jackson, owner of the Emerging Art Scene Gallery in Castleberry Hill, to attend an event at the gallery that was unlike any other. This event, aptly named Market Rwanda, would showcase a distinctive collection of beautiful handmade jewelry, home decor, and garments made by women from the impoverished country of Rwanda. Proceeds from the event would benefit One Hundred Days, a non-profit organization which aims to build Rwanda’s first pediatric hospital.

Upon entering the gallery I was immediately taken in by the wonderful collection of jewelry on display. We all know how much I love jewelry (among other things of course), and this was just the setting for me to partake in my indulgence. 😀

Now, I’ve been to quite a few events where beautiful jewelry was on the menu, and I’ve even “nibbled” a few times (or more in most cases); But this time, there was something special about these pieces, as they were unlike anything I’d seen (or bought) before. So, as I proceeded to go for a closer look, I was greeted by a lady standing near the display who was wearing one of the pieces around her neck. Of course I did the proverbial jaw-drop as it was absolutely AMAZING with its ornate and intricate design. I had to know more!

As the suspense was getting the best of me, I couldn’t help but ask her about the piece. She introduced herself as Linda Cox, and proceeded to give me the back-story behind this distinctive assortment of gorgeous neck-wear and accessories. She stated that this was no ordinary collection of jewelry, as each piece was hand crafted by the women of Rwanda. She then offered to show me some of the other pieces, but I couldn’t take my eyes off the one she was wearing. Linda noticed my childlike amazement and proceeded to remove this unique accessory from around her neck; and in a gesture of goodwill she then placed it around mine. As this gorgeous neck-wear lay on my shoulders, I couldn’t help but reflect on the significance in the moment as this was truly a work of art and deserving of its presence in the gallery. I could only imagine the undertaking that went into creating this masterpiece.

"They Had To Run" is a story of deliverance by Author & Humanitarian Linda Cox

During the presentation segment, Linda shared the inspiration behind her book “They Had to Run”, which is based on the real life story of the Linda’s Rwandan friends, Simon and Kedress Nziramakenga. In the book, Simon and Kedress flee from Rwanda to escape the war, but then return as strong leaders on a mission to build restoration in their native country. What an inspirational story of deliverance, hope, and triumph. Proceeds from the book go towards fulfilling Simon’s vision of holistic restoration through the construction of the Good Shepherd Community Hospital for Children in Kigali, Rwanda. This endeavor is part of the One Hundred Days mission.

Kirsten Haglund, Miss America 2008, also spoke about the incredible efforts of the organization and what she experienced during her journey to Rwanda.

Other speakers included Kelli Sasser, Founder of One Hundred Days, and Anna Sasser, who is part of the Million Kid Movement, which is a teen-based subsidiary of the One Hundred Days organization.

I also had the pleasure of meeting Tamika Morrison of T.Morrison Agency, who was responsible for the PR work behind this extraordinary event.

The presentation concluded with Linda urging everyone to support this effort to provide health care for the Rwandan children by purchasing the items on display in the gallery.

Well Linda, I’d personally like to start with that gorgeous necklace you’re wearing….You know; the one I couldn’t take my eyes off of. 😀
